AYBC
The Augusta Youth Ballet Company, AYBC, is a non-profit performance ensemble founded by Scattaregia in 1998. The goal and focus of the Company is to provide young dancers with the opportunity to learn classical ballet and related dance forms in their own communities, but also in a professional environment. Company members take multiple classes each week in ballet, pointe, contemporary dance, jazz, and other dance forms along with Company rehearsals.
The Company has performed the full-length production of "The Nutcracker" since 1998. The ballet is usually presented in two counties each holiday season and has been performed for over 2,000 school children. The AYBC performs a Spring Concert each year with a mixed bill of works. The AYBC also presents outreach programs for public school children. With support from The Upshur Arts Alliance and private sponsors, the AYBC provides intensive and professional training for the dancers through guest artist residencies and summer workshops.
Many of the AYBC dancers pursue intensive summer training in professional ballet schools. Several of the AYBC dancers have received scholarships in dance from Dance West Virginia and the West Virginia State Dance Festival/Division of Culture & History to attend programs such as Point Park University Summer Conservatory of Dance and North Carolina School of the Arts. The AYBC has had 11 dancers receive scholarships to the West Virginia Governors School for the Arts in dance and 1 student in theatre.
